Exploring tvOS 14: What's New and Exciting?

tvOS 14, released in 2020 and based on iOS 14, brought a range of new features and enhancements to Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD.

Picture-in-Picture

tvOS 14 expanded the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode to third-party apps, allowing users to view movies, TV shows, or apps in a small window while doing something else on the Apple TV. This feature enabled multitasking, such as watching a movie while working out or checking the news without missing a favorite TV show.

4K YouTube Support

For the first time, tvOS 14 added support for YouTube's 4K video codec, allowing users to watch YouTube videos in full 4K resolution. This improvement significantly enhanced the viewing experience for users with compatible 4K televisions.

Enhanced HomeKit Integration

tvOS 14 improved HomeKit integration, adding Home controls directly to the Control Center. This allowed users to view and control HomeKit-connected devices, such as cameras and doorbells, from their Apple TV. Users could also view HomeKit camera feeds in Picture-in-Picture mode, enhancing the smart home experience.

Audio Sharing

With tvOS 14, Apple introduced Audio Sharing, allowing two sets of AirPods or Beats headphones to connect to a single Apple TV. This feature made it possible for two people to enjoy the same content without disturbing others in the room.

Multi-User Support for Gaming

tvOS 14 brought multi-user support to gaming, enabling each user to track individual game levels, leaderboards, and invitations. This feature allowed multiple people in the same household to maintain their game progress and personalized gaming experience.

More Gaming Controller Support

tvOS 14 expanded support for gaming controllers, adding compatibility with the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controllers. This update enhanced the gaming experience on Apple TV by providing more controller options.

Screensaver Choices

tvOS 14 introduced the ability to choose specific screensaver groups, such as ocean, space, or cities, rather than having screensavers selected randomly. This customization provided users with a more personalized and visually appealing screensaver experience.

Legacy

tvOS 14 built upon the features introduced in previous updates, enhancing the functionality and versatility of Apple TV. By adding support for 4K YouTube, expanding Picture-in-Picture capabilities, and improving HomeKit integration, tvOS 14 positioned Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD as powerful entertainment hubs. These improvements emphasized seamless content access, enhanced audio and video experiences, and smarter home integration.
